Extraction Socket Management

There are a variety of clinical decisions that come into play when determining what the best solution is to replace a missing tooth for our patients. We have to ask ourselves, is cost an issue? Does the patient have the time to wait out the implant process? What should my approach be in terms of treatment planning? One thing both clinician and patient know for sure is that the tooth, or teeth must be removed and once this is done what are they left with?

Following tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge undergoes horizontal and vertical dimensional changes. It is common to see approximately 50% of the alveolar width and height resorbed1,2 within the first three months3. This can lead to ridge deformation and other complications.

Ridge Preservation with Geistlich Biomaterials

The use of scientifically documented biomaterials such as Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen® and Geistlich Bio-Gide® in ridge preservation procedures can provide new bone formation and restore the  hard tissue2,3.

Regenerative treatment also may result in:

  • Reduced number of secondary augmentations at implant placement2.
  • Superior volume preservation under pontics4.

Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen® consists of 90% Geistlich Bio-Oss® granules with the addition of 10% porcine collagen. Combining Geistlich Bio-Oss® with highly purified porcine collagen enhances it’s handling characteristics making it formable and easy to handle.

Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen® is “the Essential Choice” because:

  • Geistlich Bio-Oss®particles serve as a scaffold for new bone and results in predictable bone regeneration10,5.
  • Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen®augmented tissue maintains long-term volume preservation due to the low resorption rate of the material6,7.
  • Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen®significantly improves clinical attachment gain and pocket depth reduction in periodontal surgery8.
  • Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen®has the ability to regenerate the periodontal attachment apparatus in intrabony defects9.
