Dr. Sanjukta Mohanta doesn’t work at a standard practice. She works at WellFort Community Health Centre treating children and seniors on public dental programs. She is the chair of the Ontario Dental Association’s Community Services Committee, past president of the Halton-Peel Dental Association and, among other accomplishments, successfully delegated to keep water fluoridation in her region.
Because she treats patients on government assistance, her practice varies slightly from the standard. The community health centre model comes with strict budgetary and process oversight by the government, and although this may seem onerous, it does ensure extremely efficient processes, time allocation, and document storage. So, we asked Dr. Mohanta a few questions that we think all dental practices can benefit from:
What dental material have you recently adopted that has significantly impacted your practice positively?
Using Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) has been a tremendous help in stopping tooth decay without using instruments. It allows us to help patients, such as young children and medically compromised patients, who are unable to get traditional treatment. Patients like it because it’s quick and painless and it avoids general anaesthesia.
How is your practice holding up during Covid-19?
We use tele-dentistry and it is working wonderfully. We can maximize our time by effectively triaging visits and decreasing the number of non-necessary visits. The patients save time by not coming in and we can do quite a bit of on the phone including assessment, prescribing medication for pharmacy pickup, and reassuring parents if it is a non-emergency like a wiggly tooth on a child. Ultimately, we are making it easier for patients to get advice quickly and avoid a trip to the dentist or the emergency room.
What is the biggest piece of advice you can give other practices?
Go paperless! Get digital radiographs, do online charting and scan documents into your dental software. You can do even more like having patients complete forms online before they come to the office. Just think of how much time you’ll save looking for charts! It is truly efficient because everything is in one place and easily accessible.
